Job Description
Introduction
The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programm is an internationally
recognized center for research and research training funded by the Wellcome Trust. MLW would like
to engage the services of a competent and dynamic individual to work in an exciting research
programme at MLW Research facility as it is expanding.
Job Summary:
The accountant (CORE Training Grant) will be responsible for the financial and accounting records of
the training component of MLW’s CORE grant. S/he will monitor adherence to the terms, policies, and
procedures of the training grant, MOUs, and sub-awardee grants financial reporting throughout their
funding and training cycles.

• Serving as the point of contact for all inquiries and queries relating to the CORE training grant
reports.
• In liaison with the Accounts team, validate training grants expenditure supporting documentation
to ensure that all training grant financial transactions are valid, adequately supported, and
processed in accordance with standing financial policies and procedures.
• Assessthe capacity-building component of incoming grantsin line with the SOP and track income.
• Managing training grantee sub-awardees budgets by monitoring their grant expenditure to ensure
that it is within their limits as stipulated by the terms of grant agreements.
• Verifying appropriateness of UK and international transferstraining grant budget limitations.
• Preparing monthly, quarterly, and any ad hoc training grant reports asrequested by the supervisor.
• Communicating potential cost overrunsto Supervisor and agreeing on remedial action.
• Preparing schedulesfor internal and external audit purposesfor the training grant.
• Involvement in training grant closure activities and giving advice prior to exit so that all necessary
grant closure requirements are followed.
• Downloading and circulating monthly SERENIC training grant reports and addressing all queries
raised from them.
• Help conduct new and existing trainee/staff inductions and training in Finance and Grants
management, particularly to beneficiaries of the CORE training grant.
• Assist the Accounts Team with other MLW accounting tasks when required.
• Any other relevant responsibilities that may be assigned by the line manager occasionally
Requirements
Qualifications and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
• Chartered Accountant Malawi Level 2 or equivalent.
• A minimum of 3 years of work experience in a similar role and institution.
• A member in good standing with ICAM.
Personal Specifications
• A great personality, temperament, and high emotional intelligence.
• Computer literate (MS Windows, MS Office, accounting software.)
• Good report-writing skills.
• Able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people.
• Efficient and well-organized, with excellent attention to detail.
• Enthusiastic and able to work under pressure and to deadlines.
• Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing situations and workloads.
