Overview
Founded in 1987, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is a global organization providing cutting-edge medicine and advocacy to over 2,300,000 patients in 47 countries. In Malawi, AHF is working in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MOH) to strengthen access to quality treatment for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). AHF Malawi is providing these services in 28 hard-to-reach health facilities in Dedza, Lilongwe, Ntcheu, Chikwawa, and Nsanje Districts.
To accomplish its goals in the nation, AHF Malawi is seeking highly qualified and experienced candidates for the following position:
Position: Psychosocial Counsellor (1)
Reports to: Regional Medical Officer
Duty Station: Nsanje District Hospital
Overall Responsibility
The Psychosocial Counselor will provide high-quality psychosocial care services and therapeutic support to people living with HIV, their partners, and families. The incumbent will ensure compliance with the Malawi Mental Health Treatment Act, Mental Health Policy, and the Medical Council of Malawi Code of Conduct and Patient Charter to improve service delivery.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide a safe and supportive environment for clients to freely express their feelings.
- Conduct psychological assessments through interviews, observations, and tests, including risk assessment for suicidal thoughts.
- Develop and provide appropriate individual, family, and group-based psychotherapeutic interventions.
- Ensure all clients receive psychosocial counseling, with documented assessment notes, diagnostic records, intervention plans, and progress reports.
- Maintain client privacy and confidentiality regarding treatment and other sensitive information.
- Regularly evaluate the impact of psychotherapeutic interventions through operational research and assist in strengthening existing programs.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to assess clients’ additional needs and develop treatment plans.
- Provide timely and relevant feedback to healthcare providers. Offer consultation and counseling services to facility staff when necessary.
Qualifications, Experience, and Attributes
- A Diploma in Psychosocial Counseling from a recognized institution.
- At least two years of experience providing psychosocial counseling services, including client assessment and psychotherapeutic interventions for individuals, couples, families, and communities.
- Strong respect and care for people living with HIV.
- In-depth knowledge of HIV programs and the Ministry of Health service delivery system is preferred.
- Certification in HIV Testing Services (HTS) and experience working with people living with HIV, particularly children and adolescents, will be an added advantage.
- Computer literacy with proficiency in word processing and spreadsheets.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
