To achieve its mission statement, the Hospital is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the Position of Principal Nursing Officer.

 

1. Job Title: Principal Nursing Officer (One Post)

2. Grade: G

3. Location: Pirimiti Hospital

4. Department:  Nursing

5. Reporting Officer: The Hospital Director / Administrator

6. Supervision Exercised: Senior Nursing Officer, Nursing Officers, Nurse/Midwife Technicians, and Hospital Attendants.

 

7. Job summary

The Principal Nursing Officer will largely be responsible for planning and implementing quality nursing activities in the wards. Further, he/she will also be responsible for demonstrating leadership and influence skills, providing policy and advice and ensure sound planning and delivery of health care systems and services.

 

8. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deploying nursing staff depending on the services provided and the needs of the hospital.
  • Planning and implementing comprehensive quality nursing care, using the nursing/midwifery process and critical thinking.
  • Supervising all nursing/midwifery activities.
  • Monitoring nursing staff performance and consequently conducting performance evaluation biannually and annually in consultation with the Human Resource Department.
  • Monitoring documentation and maintenance of accurate records of all nursing care performed during nursing care.
  • Performing and meeting the daily living activities of patients 24 hours/day.
  • Providing direction and leadership in the facilitation and implementation of standards and procedures of nursing and midwifery care.
  • Facilitating adherence to standard precautions of infection prevention and control practices, consequently promoting safe work environment.
  • Facilitating adherence to standard precautions and procedures.
  • Collaborating with other health care providers in meeting specific needs of patients.
  • Providing assistance in the interpretation of hospital policies and procedures in nursing/midwifery care.
  • Building, maintaining and promoting therapeutic relationship with patients, guardians and fellow health care providers.
  • Participating in developing hospital policies and procedures and other management tools.
  • Facilitating monthly and quarterly meetings for all nursing cadres.
  • Ensuring that all nurses are practising legally and that they are duly registered with the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi.
  • Lobbying with management and ensuring that required equipment is available and equitably distributed to meet hospital standards.
  • Maintaining the professional code of conduct at all times.
  • Preparing nursing department budget and present it to management for approval.
  • Submitting reports to the authorities including District Health Office regarding progress, problems and issues which influence patient care.
  • Participating in disciplinary matters as per laid down procedures in employment statutes.
  • Identifying staff training needs and monitoring the implementation of continuous professional development.
  • Any other duties deemed reasonable assigned from time to time.

 

9. Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery obtained from recognized and NCHE accredited training institution.
  • Registered with the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi.
  • At least four (4) years’ work experience at Grade H as a Senior Nursing Officer or working at the same Grade G in a busy hospital environment.
