MEIRU

The Malawi Epidemiology and Intervention Research Unit (MEIRU) is an independent research unit that operates in Karonga District and Lilongwe City. MEIRU conducts research programmes in partnership with the Malawi Ministry of Health, the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the University of Glasgow and other national and international partners.
MEIRU seeks to recruit suitably qualified and motivated individuals to fill various positions, including Field Officers and Biosampling Officers (any cadre permitted to conduct venepuncture) at the Area 25, Lilongwe research site. The selected candidates will play important roles in supporting different aspects of our studies.

BIOSAMPLING OFFICER (AREA 25, LILONGWE) – MULTIPLE POSITIONS (GRADE E) Vacancy reference: 2025_LL_BSO

The Biosampling Officer will join the MEIRU field and clinical teams and play an important role in collecting biological specimens (including blood venipuncture). consenting, interviewing, counselling, examining, treating and referring study participants/patients. He or she will report results, manage clinical conditions as authorised and liaise with line manager and laboratory staff to facilitate rapid reporting of results.

In addition, the postholder will respond to queries from MEIRU’s data office. He or she will co-ordinate patient care with internal and external stakeholders, provide study information and consent potential participants in an appropriate manner.

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL

1) A Diploma in nursing and midwifery from a well-recognised institution, registered with Nurses Council of Malawi OR a Certificate in clinical medicine from a recognized institution, registered with the Medical Council of Malawi and two years previous experience working in a similar position.
2) Fluency in Chichewa and English languages.
3) Residency within Area 25 or surrounding districts/areas.
4) Prepared to spend considerable time in the field, and to ride a motorcycle, with training if necessary.

DESIRABLE

1) Proficiency in motorbike riding and valid licence.
2) Valid HTC certification obtained within five years prior to application.
