About us:

Inter Aide is an international organisation specialised in implementing programmes that promote access to development for the most vulnerable communities. Inter Aide has been working in Malawi since 1992 with interventions around Health, Water Maintenance and Agricultural development in the Central and Southern regions of Malawi.

The Agroforestry Program in Lilongwe Rural promotes community-based agroforestry tree nursery management and tree planting, agroforestry hedges and natural regeneration of trees to address fuelwood shortages, land degradation and soil fertility decline. The project works closely with local communities through practical, low-cost and sustainable techniques to support tree management and ownership.

From June 2025, Inter Aide is looking to hire a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer on a one-year contract, with the possibility of an extension.

About the Position:

The Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officer will be responsible for the planning, implementation and reporting of monitoring and evaluation activities for the Agroforestry Program in Lilongwe District (TA Chadza, TA Kalumbu, TA Masula) and the office is in Mitundu. The M&E Officer will closely collaborate with Agroforestry Officers and the Program Manager to ensure effective data collection, analysis and reporting on all project activities.

M&E will also design and lead relevant surveys and pilot studies, monitor key indicators and ensure data-driven decision-making across the program.

The M&E Officer is expected to spend about 50% of the time in rural areas for data collection, to demonstrate strong skills in data collection, analysis, and reporting using Excel and digital tools like KoboToolbox, as well as coordinate field survey operations with high attention to accuracy and ethical data practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In this capacity, the M&E Officer will be responsible for:

  • Planning and coordinating monitoring activities (e.g. survival surveys, training coverage, seedling distribution in collaboration with field teams.
  • Preparing and supervising implementation of surveys (baseline/endline, household surveys, etc.).
  • Managing, supervising and training temporary survey staff and enumerators.
  • Designing relevant indicators and monitoring tools aligned with the program’s objectives.
  • Designing, testing and validating survey questionnaires based on project indicators and field context.
  • Ensuring data quality through continuous checks, cleaning protocols and cross-validation.
  • Supporting data analysis and interpretation, and presenting findings to the team.
  • Coordinating with the Program Manager to draft monthly and quarterly reports with M&E data.
  • Participating in strategic planning meetings, including preparation of the annual work plan.
  • Using digital tools (e.g., Kobo, ODK) to deploy and supervise data collection.
  • Conducting spatial analysis and basic mapping using QGIS or Google Earth as needed.

Qualifications and Experience:

Required:

  • Strong command of Excel, including use of formulas, data validation, and data organization.
  • Solid experience with digital data collection tools such as KoboToolbox, ODK or similar platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement surveys, including sampling strategy, questionnaire design, and enumerator supervision.
  • Experience in data cleaning, analysis, and presenting key findings in a clear and actionable format.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly present data and interact effectively with field teams and local stakeholders. Excellent communication in Chichewa and English (written and verbal).
  • High level of honesty, integrity, and teamwork with the ability to collaborate with both field teams and local communities.
  • Passion for field work and adaptation to field-based environments.

Preferred:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Science, Geography, Development Studies, or any other relevant field.
  • Degree or formal training in Monitoring and Evaluation, Information Technology, Mathematics, or Data Science.
  • Research experience, particularly in agriculture or agroforestry-related topics, including survey design, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Previous experience conducting M&E activities for agroforestry or rural development projects.
  • Experience in agroforestry, environmental conservation or rural development projects.
  • Good knowledge of QGIS and Google Earth for basic mapping and spatial analysis.
  • Ability to ride a motorbike is an advantage
