Clinton Health Access Initiative

Individual Consultancy Services

Qualitative Data Analysis for HPV Retention and Community Based Self Sampling Studies
Duration: 30 Days

A. Organisation Overview

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our
mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We
work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain
high-quality health systems.

CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with
the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus.  Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious
diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into
cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate
the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition,
and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen
health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing.
With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at
scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally,
and learnings are shared globally.

At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their
talent, time, dedication and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of
enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skillsets and life experiences. CHAI
is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with majority of our staff based in program countries.

B. Scope of Work of The Consultancy

Malawi has the highest cervical cancer incidence and mortality in the world, with an age-standardized
rate of 67.9 and 51.5 per 100,000 population respectively. Cervical cancer is also the most common
female cancer among women aged 15 to 44 years accounting 37% of all new cancer cases among
females in the country. High prevalence of HIV and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infections,
inadequate screening and treatment services for precancerous lesions, late diagnosis, limited access
to timely, standard treatment of cancer and palliative care are the main contributing factors for
high cervical cancer incidence and mortality. HPV vaccination and effective programs to screen and
treat women for pre-cancerous lesions (primary and secondary prevention, respectively) offer the
opportunity to move towards elimination of cervical cancer as a public health problem.

CHAI in collaboration with the Malawi Ministry of Health (MOH) launched a partnership in 2019 that
aim to strengthen cervical cancer secondary prevention services by leveraging existing platforms
such as multiple diagnostic and Visual Inspection with Acetic acid (VIA) screening programs to deploy
innovative tools on the market that are not yet widely used in Malawi. CHAI and MOH launched two
research studies to follow up retention rates among HPV positive women accessing cervical cancer
screening services (HPV Retention study) and to demonstrate effectiveness, feasibility and cost of two
HPV self-testing implementation models (CBSS Study). The two studies have qualitative components
(in-depth interviews and focus group discussions).

The program is therefore seeking consultancy services from an experienced qualitative data analyst
to analyze qualitative data, comprised of 23 client and 10 health workers in-depth interviews for the
HPV Retention Study (with recordings of 40 minutes, on average, and, tentatively, four community
health workers’ focus group discussions of up to 1 hour each for the CBSS Study, comprised of 8 to
10 participants.

1. Initial draft and finalized code book
2. Descriptor file
3. Exported copies of the coded transcripts and code reports
