Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) is a Trust that was established to provide a safe and adequate supply of blood and blood products to meet the needs of all patients in authorised hospitals in Malawi. It is committed to meet its objective of collecting, processing and testing all blood from voluntary non-remunerated blood donors in low-risk populations to international standards, in a cost efficient manner.

Job Summary
The Head of the Centre is responsible to and receive direction from the Medical Officer.
He/she will work in close collaboration with section heads in planning, organizing, coordinating and implementing activities of the centre while adhering to approved Standard Operating Procedures in order to meet the regional blood needs through meeting the centre’s blood collection targets and ensuring equitable blood distribution to hospital blood banks.
He/she will ensure smooth running of the Blood Transfusion Centre adhering to Terms and Conditions of Employment for the Malawi Blood Transfusion Service.
Qualification, Experience and Competencies:
- Degree in Biomedical Science/Nursing, Health Management, Business Administration or Public Administration
- Registered with the relevant regulatory bodies.
- Having worked in Blood Transfusion Service for at least 3 years or in a similar senior position elsewhere for 5 years.
- Good communication skills
- Ability to build a successful team
Description of Tasks
- Coordinates day to day operational activities of Laboratory, Blood Donor, Public Relations and Administration departments for the centre to meet its blood collection targets and to attain equitable blood distribution.
- Ensures implementation of quality assurance at the Centre.
- Ensures sustained availability of resources for individual departments to carry out tasks for continuous improved service delivery
- Initiates periodical management meetings to enhance integration, service delivery performance, quality improvement and staff development
- Ensures proper documentation, timely data capture, compilation of statistics and regular submission of reports to the Medical Officer and other relevant Managers.
- Ensures staff management (adherence to MBTS conditions of service, maintenance of discipline, signed job descriptions, timely staff appraisals and in collaboration with sectional heads, identification of staff training needs and participates in development of training plan)
- Ensures proper reconciliation and management of funds such as petty cash, donor refunds, funds for fuel and in liaison with the Medical Officer and Finance Manager take appropriate corrective actions in the event of any misappropriations in a timely manner
- Ensures that vehicles, buildings and equipment are properly maintained and kept clean at all times.
- Helps in the day to day operations for the department s/he has professional qualifications and skills in and provides cover for the senior officer in that department.
