Full-time – Fixed-term – 3 years (view to extend)

Malawi based role

This newly created role of Senior Lecturer in Public Policy is a part of an ambitious agenda to strengthen research capacity and add to the quality of the programmes supporting our values to save lives in resource poor countries through research, education, and capacity strengthening.

· Key leadership role in the development of the field of Public Policy for health.

· Based at the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust Programme (MLW) in Blantyre, Malawi https://www.mlw.mw/.

· International partner and project collaboration.

· Develop and promote strategy for research and capacity development in Policy Engagement.

· Supporting and advising on the promotion of Policy Engagement.

This role offers the post holder a unique and exciting opportunity to play an integral role as a key leader in the development of the field of Public Policy for Health in Africa, with a particular focus on policy engagement.

Reporting to the Dean of Clinical Science and International Public Health you will present as a respected leader with proven ability to form effective working relationships internally and externally to drive the vision and strategy of LSTM.

The role:

We are looking to appoint an outstanding individual who will enable LSTM to further develop its contribution to knowledge and research-led teaching and collaborative research. The successful applicant will work with MLW’s Senior Management Team to implement and further develop MLWs policy engagement strategy; while increasing the quantity and quality of policy engagement training programmes and secondments.

Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

· Grant Income: Develop and secure research grant applications to maintain and enhance external sources of funding.

· Research & Research Excellence Framework (REF): Develop an outstanding level of research performance in terms of publications, externally funded projects, and scholarly activity, where excellence is defined as ‘setting the international research agenda’.

· Policy Engagement: Strengthen Public Policy collaborations at regional and global level through LSTM’s collaborative research programmes.

· Policy Engagement: Working with MLW’s Senior Management Team to implement and further develop MLW’s Policy Engagement Strategy

· Teaching: To increase the quantity and quality of Policy Engagement training programmes and secondments.

· Mentorship: Provide supervision and mentorship to MLW’s Policy Engagement Team

· Additional: Take an appropriate share of administrative and pastoral duties, while acting in a collegial and supportive manner.

Demonstrated excellence in leadership and a focus on strengthening research excellence. Key to the success of your application is your ability to demonstrate success against the criteria below (see Job Description for full criteria):

Qualifications & Training:

· relevant PhD or equivalent and, Extensive knowledge of the Public Policy field

Skills & Experience:

· Extensive and substantial track record of improving human health through Public Policy work in Africa.

· Interpreting external political landscapes combined with the capability to influence key stakeholders in low-income countries.

· Practical experience of creating training for Research staff in the skills needed to become “trusted advisors” to governments, health institutions, local and international NGOs, multilateral bodies such as WHO and funding agencies.

· Decisive in prioritizing and delivering agreed plans to budget and deadlines.

Knowledge & Behaviours:

· Knowledge and behaviours that support equality, diversity, and inclusive practice.

· Able to work meticulously and with strong attention to detail, and to critically assess one’s own work and that of other staff to ensure quality and accuracy of output by the team.

· Ability to lead on projects with multiple stakeholders from different collaborations and to deliver against agreed timeframes and milestones.
