Affordable Solar for Villagers (AS4V)

Affordable Solar for Villagers (AS4V), is a registered non-governmental organization headquartered in Blantyre, Malawi. We are committed to addressing energy poverty by providing sustainable, affordable solar solutions that empower rural communities, stimulate economic growth, and promote women’s leadership through our network of women-led solar shops.

To strengthen our governance and strategic direction, AS4V is inviting applications from qualified and passionate individuals to serve as Volunteer Board Members.

Desired Qualifications

Our Board currently consists of five Directors. We are seeking two additional Directors with strong interest and/or experience in:

  • Renewable energy and sustainable development
  • Women’s empowerment and gender equality
  • Fundraising, resource mobilization, and donor engagement
  • NGO governance and leadership

Academic

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • A Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Development Studies, Environmental Studies, Business Administration, Public Policy, Law, or related field, will be an added advantage.

Experience

  • Prior experience serving as an NGO Board Member will be an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, think strategically, and support organizational growth.
  • Administrative management skills, especially financial oversight skills, will be considered a plus.
  • Quantitative research and technical development skills will be considered a plus.
  • Strong established relationships with government and NGO decision-makers will be considered a plus.

Languages

  • Must be fluent in written and spoken English, as well as Chichewa. Fluency in other Malawian languages is also considered helpful.

Key Expectations

  • Provide strategic oversight and governance to AS4V.
  • Support fundraising and resource mobilization efforts.
  • Act as an ambassador for AS4V, strengthening partnerships, networks and collaboration with local, district and national and international NGOs, government agencies and initiatives.
  • Commit to flexible online engagement and occasional in-person activities.
  • Malawian citizenship required to be a voting Director.
  • Non-Malawian citizens may apply for a non-voting advisory role.
  • Uphold AS4V’s values of Integrity, Inclusivity, Transparency, and Sustainability.

Terms

  • The position is voluntary.

  • Board members receive a modest honorarium to cover expenses related to meetings or activities attended.

  • Board members will serve for an initial three-year term, renewable based on performance and mutual agreement.

  • Board members will be asked to participate in at least one committee.

  • Board members should expect to spend 2 to 12 hours/month between reading and engaging with emails, WhatsApp chats, relevant research, proposal and participating in meetings.
